Welcome!
We welcome you to a very unique club whose main goal is to introduce you to the most unique flushing dog in the world: The Welsh Springer Spaniel.
The Welsh Springer’s History
It is thought that the Welsh Springer Spaniel originates from a little white and red hunting dog brought to Wales by the Gauls in around 250 BC. The Bretons (part of Gaul) needed a dog that provided them with some kind of warning before it flushed the bird. Consequently, they selectively bred for dogs that hesitated and waited for the hunter to get into position before charging in and putting the birds to flight.
It was this little forerunner that arrived in Wales which we now know as the Welsh Springer Spaniel.
Hunting with a Welsh Springer
Welsh Springer Spaniels are different. They will methodically work the bird’s scent alternating between the ground and the air. Once close to the bird and most often just before the flush a Welsh springer will pause briefly then charge in to flush the bird. For the sportsman who doesn’t want an overpowering dog, but instead wants a medium-sized dog that works at a moderate pace, the Welsh Springer Spaniel is the ideal “gentlemen’s” dog for the field and home.
